Definition of energy: Measure of the ability of a body or system to do work or produce a change, expressed usually in joules or kilowatt hours (kWh). No activity is possible without energy and its total amount in the universe is fixed. In other words, it cannot be created or destroyed but can only be changed from one type to another.  Definition found here: http://www.businessdictionary.com/definition/energy.html

I think about this idea of energy transferring between people at least once per day, if not more.  It’s been apparent to me for a long time that certain people have the ability to transfer massive amounts of energy in a room, either up or down- but it can’t ever be removed or destroyed as the definition mentions above.

Diana Kokoszka, Chief Executive Officer for KW MAPS Coaching first brought the topic of your energy to the forefront of my mind last summer, 2015.  I was in Austin, Texas with Jesse D. Moore & Katie Silver at Coaching Skills Camp.  We spent 2 days learning as much as we could from Diana and Tony DiCello about coaching, leading and bringing our teams together.  Diana talked a lot about how she realized her energy could either make or break a situation.  And I completely identify with that.

A few months after that event I went to a concert with Sarah Troske.  We went to see Rachel Platten at the Showbox in Seattle, a lady who also has the ability to impact energy with intensity.  After realizing that much of the crowd consisted of 13-18 year olds, I got over it and was floored by Rachel’s energy.  The positivity in the room was literally bursting from the stage.  One of her songs is called “Stand By You” and I listen to it when I need to get jacked up in the morning on the way to the office.  Ask me to defend myself and I will do it no problem, ask me to defend someone else- and I will fight to the death.  I am a protector for sure.

I’ve spent a lot of time these last 4 years exploring what I’m good at, what I believe, and what I want to do with my life.  Pickett Street does that to you 🙂  When I think about what I like to do, what fills me with energy, and where I have made an impact on people’s lives, I realize that a lot of that has to do with my energy.  I like the idea of being that spark in the room, or in a relationship – that causes someone to change their mind, trajectory or life in some positive way.

What I also realize, and struggle with- is the responsibility of it. And I’ve come to accept it.  The idea that my energy can have a massive impact on someone else’s day, life, or situation- has been more than I can handle at times.  I should be allowed to have a bad day!!  I should be able to complain, have a negative moment, hour, day, week, month if need be.  And I can.  But I can also handle that gracefully, and different from how I have handled it in the past.  I strongly believe this is my purpose in life, to inspire and spark people to action.  Thus, I can handle the responsibility, and in fact change my mindset to embrace it.
